Katie Schroeder recently received two BFA’s from Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis Indiana. Her work consistently talks about the social condition of America and the role that pop culture and social media has within current times. She focuses her effort on ideas that deal with the traditional theater motif of breaking the fourth wall as well as taking cues from politics, entertainment, and social media. Her attention is beginning to shift to absurdity within the culture and the amount that a personas role can actually be stretched. Her focus is in object based video pieces with nods to traditional object making.
Her upbringing in the Midwest leads many of her pieces to talk about the dismal truth of the modern American dream. She gravitates towards objects typically found within current and classic media pairing them with actions that ultimately redefine the body’s relationship to the art work. Schroeder is currently a candidate in the 3d4m program at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she is broadening her understanding of American culture and focusing in on the state of the nation and the her generation as a whole.
